The sugar in soda is often a key ingredient that can contribute to weight gain and obesity. Along with this, there are many other health risks associated with drinking soda including diabetes and heart disease. Brazilian ginger ale is one of the best alternatives to soda and is also considered highly refreshing. Some diet sodas are even more harmful than regular ones, like Diet Coke and Diet Dr Pepper which contain similar amounts of sugar as regular Coca-Cola or Pepsi-Cola. So it may be best to avoid Soda altogether rather than finding the one that’s “Best for you”.

1. Soda does not help in weight loss. 

When a person drinks more soda, the body will crave for more of it and this ultimately leads to weight gain. One half-cup of soda can contain 150 calories just like one full cup of coffee. It is best to avoid soda and drink water or the healthiest alternative- coconut water.

2. Soda causes can contribute to diabetes. 

The sugar in soda provides the body with plenty of calories which are not required by the body. These unnecessary calories then get stored as fat around vital organs like the heart and lungs, where it has no business being there in the first place. The sharp increase in obesity levels led to a rise in cases of diabetes, which is another major percentage of deaths among people who are obese.

3. Soda causes your liver to work overtime. 

The high levels of sugar and preservatives in soda can cause an overload on the liver which has control over the blood sugar levels in the body. When this process goes haywire, this leads to a rise in blood sugar levels and also an increase in insulin resistance which eventually begins to cause type 2 diabetes, a condition that currently numbers about 325 million people around the world; including 1 million Americans.

4. Soda contains just as much sugar as a candy bar. 

Soda does not provide the same amount of satisfaction. One candy bar can contain as many as 25 teaspoons of sugar in it, whereas one 12 ounce soda can have up to 15 teaspoons of sugar. This means that a person would have to drink two 12 ounce sodas to be able to reach the level of sugar that would come from one candy bar. This is one way of estimating people who are on a diet, those who want to lose some weight or those people who just want to curb their craving for sweets.

5. Soda is not healthy even if it’s a diet. 

A diet soda is sweetened with artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which is one of the most popular ones. According to a research published in the ‘Diabetologia’ Journal and other studies, people who drink diet soda more than four times a day and drink three cans of it a day are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, there is a debate about whether artificial sweeteners are healthy or not.

Soda is one of the major causes for hypertension or high blood pressure and also for heart disease. There are many studies that have stated that women who drink soda more than three times a week are at higher risk of heart disease.

7. Soda can cause osteoporosis. 

The high sugar content in soda can cause the body to lose calcium which results in osteoporosis, one of the most common bone diseases around the world which leads to crumbling of bones and development of holes in them which ultimately leads to severe deformities, pain and disability.

8. Soda leads to tooth decay. 

For many people, soda is the first choice that they have when it comes to quenching their thirst. However, this is one of the worst things that a person can do to their teeth because soda contains phosphoric acid which causes erosion of tooth enamel and cavities. One 12-ounce can of regular soda can contain 8 percent of your daily recommended value (RDA) for phosphoric acid and diet sodas contain as much as 10 Percent RDA for phosphoric acid.

9. Soda causes obesity in children. 

Children who consume soda regularly are more prone to obesity. 40 percent of kids between the ages of 8 and 12 year old drink soda while 23 percent drink it daily and this can cause a lot of problems with their overall health. Obese children are more likely to develop diabetes and heart disease in their later years, which means that they can spend the rest of their lives paying medical bills.

10. Sodas contain high levels of phosphoric acid, which causes severe dental problems.
