This post about job hunting in the spreadsheet industry should help make things easier for you if you’re one of those people who are looking for a new opportunity. When using a spreadsheet, the expression =d8-d17 is called a ________.
1. Find an Online Job Board
First, it’s important to understand that there aren’t any real job boards in the spreadsheet industry. This is an area of study and the industry is still fairly new. However, there are more than a few fairly large companies that have posted jobs on a number of different sites.
2. The Numbers
As I mentioned above, it’s important to understand that there really aren’t any real job boards within the spreadsheet industry right now. However, there are plenty of sites that provide positions for software engineers who work for particular online businesses. These positions are all about technology, but in different ways than you might be accustomed to (for example, technology is not used at the level it would be in the IT department).
3. What Online Businesses In The Spreadsheet Industry Are Hiring?
The two companies that seem to hire the most spreadsheet engineers are Google and Amazon. Both of these sites contract out much of the work to smaller businesses, but they are the ones who post all of the positions. They’re both looking for very specific skills as well as experience levels (experience with spreadsheets is required for all candidates…in fact, there’s a lot of emphasis on candidates who have experience with spreadsheets).
4. Company Requirements
So, let’s take a look at some of the requirements for each company, shall we? Google hires spreadsheet engineers through their contracting portion of the business. They require:
-You must be proficient in Google Apps for Work (formerly called Google Apps)
-You must have experience working with spreadsheets in at least one of the following ways:
A. A full featured spreadsheet application (Excel, MS Office, OpenOffice.org, etc.)
B. A basic spreadsheet application (i.e., Excel Online, OpenOffice Calc)
-You must have experience working with other web services that you can use to interface with them (JSON must be used to transmit data between the web server and an API).
-You must have experience working with RESTful APIs, XML Webservice and JSON Web Services
-You must have experience developing mobile apps for tablets and smartphones running on Google’s Android or Apple platforms
Amazon hires spreadsheet engineers through their contracting portion of the business. They require:
-A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science or an allied field (e.g. math, statistics, physics)
-Experience in a Linux environment
-Experience in a Windows environment
-Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases
-Strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Both of these companies offer a broad range of needful spreadsheet experience and salary. However, you may have some difficulty applying for a job directly with either of them. The problem here is that although you may be very familiar with spreadsheets and have worked as one, your experience might not be seen as being “technical.”
6. Conclusion (cont’d)
One solution to this issue is to find an online business that is hiring via an online job board such as Dice or HotJobs . If you do this well enough, you could open the door to direct opportunities with that company. A related idea is to find “job boards” in the industry itself; try searching for them on Google. Many of the job sites for software engineers involve technical writing and marketing, so it might be a good place to start looking.
7. Conclusion (cont’d)
More extensive alternatives are out there, however. The two companies who hire the most spreadsheet engineers are Google and Amazon. One might imagine that those two companies would be a good place to look for opportunities, but they’re both fairly large corporations with extremely limited hiring requirements. Instead, you should take a look at smaller companies who have posted jobs on large job boards like Dice or HotJobs . These jobs will require greater skill with spreadsheets but offer a better chance of obtaining an actual position.
