1. Plan ahead.
The first thing you can do to simplify your commute is plan ahead. Running meetings, or even just calling people ahead of time to let them know you’ll be late is a great way to save time. People are more likely to be understanding if they don’t have to worry about not seeing their driver when they arrive. Once you’re on the road, try and anticipate how long each drive will take, and keep an eye on the clock.
2. Avoid distractions.
It’s inevitable that at times you will become distracted while driving, whether talking with your passenger or even fiddling with the radio. Make sure to turn off the radio, and never, ever use your phone while driving. If you’re really worried about being distracted by listening to music, try using a headset instead – it will cut down on the risk of being caught even more than headphones usually do.
3. Follow the traffic rules and signals.
Each state has their own set of traffic laws for when you should yield to other drivers and when there are special signals for passing other vehicles from behind a stopped line or making turns. Sometimes these rules can be harder to understand than others, so make sure to pay attention and follow them.
4. Use your turn signals.
There’s nothing worse than taking a turn too fast, or suddenly slowing down for no apparent reason. If you’re in an area with a lot of traffic, it’s especially important to make sure you’re not turning at a time when other drivers are trying to pass you on another road.
5. Drive with caution on expressways.
In some areas it can be hard to know if you’re allowed to pass on a freeway. Even more confusing is when passing is allowed, and when it isn’t. The best thing you can do is pay attention and restrain yourself from going much faster than you need to while passing, and stay in your lane until there’s enough room between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you so that they’ll notice before they start slamming on their brakes. Don’t try to pass them on the other side of the road – that’s dangerous too!
6. Never ignore road construction signs.
Even if you’re not aware of it, road construction signs will get your attention. If there’s a sign that says you need to slow down, or a work zone ahead where there are restrictions on what type of vehicle you can travel in, obey it.
7. Give yourself time to stop at crosswalks.
Sometimes there will be roadwork or construction near an intersection that could make for an easy detour, so don’t touch the brakes until it’s safe to do so. In areas where pedestrians cross the street at intersections, we all have to stop if they’re around. Always be aware of your surroundings as you drive, and don’t take off before the light changes.
8. Snap to a relaxed state of mind.
We all know it’s hard to stay focused when we’re anxious or distracted – this is especially true while we’re driving. Try taking a deep breath and focusing on your surroundings, or try repeating the words “I am” over and over again in your head. This will help you stay focused on the road, which is a much better use of your attention than hitting that “next track” button on your stereo or taking a fast look down at your phone to see who just texted you back…
9. Avoid rush hour traffic whenever possible.
If you’re running late, it’s better to leave early – if there are no posted speed limits pay attention to how fast you’re going. The last thing you want to do is get a ticket when you have somewhere else to be.
