“Dissociation is a mental separation of the personality or consciousness from one’s immediate surrounding.
In this blog post we will discuss what dissociative disorders are.
How they manifest themselves in adults who suffer with them?
What are dissociative disorders?
Dissociation is a mental separation of the personality or consciousness from one’s immediate surroundings.
Either to protect the individual from something too painful.
Or because they are overwhelmed by what is happening.
This can be caused by trauma and abuse in childhood but there are other causes as well that we will discuss here.
Dissociated people often have difficulty with memory .
Both consolidating memories and retrieving them.
Including not being able to remember certain aspects of their own life such as how old they are.
They also have problems staying focused on tasks at hand which may result in attention seeking behaviors like fidgeting, spinning objects around themselves while sitting down etc.
Difficulties managing emotions and social interactions resulting in confusion between reality.
