Murder Mystery Party is a game that has been around for decades and has seen a recent resurgence in popularity.
It involves one player, or “detective,” who tries to figure out which person among the other players committed the murder.
The detective interrogates each of the suspects, while they try to provide alibis and avoid being found guilty.
To make things more interesting, there are some aspects of role-playing involved as well—the detective can choose what type of character he wants to be (for example: an eccentric professor).
And then speak accordingly throughout the game. The game is usually played over one or two days.
A designated “host” sets up the party and provides some basic information about where, when, why, who committed the murder (known as the “murderer”) .
And what type of weapon was used.
The host then prepares a crime scene with physical clues that will help lead players towards solving the myster.
These might be footprints in blood leading to an outdoor hanging tree branch bearing red leaves from last autumn’s fall season.
Lamps on either side of a door being switched off by someone after they left it open but before they went back into another room.
Curtains parted just enough so that you see something reflecting light in them; etc. This way, each player can have their own turn.
