The sad thing about the silence is that it never lasts. A person walks by, or a car drives by, and suddenly there’s noise again. You’ve been sitting in silence for hours on end and you are just waiting for someone to come along and break your solitude with their life. There was this one time when I sat in my backyard at night and didn’t hear a single sound all night long – no crickets, no birds chirping – nothing but the wind blowing through the leaves of nearby trees.

It felt like I had found some kind of solace that I could never find anywhere else because there was nowhere else where it would be so quiet as out there in my yard alone at night under the moonlight with just the sound of nature, but then I heard something and it felt like a punch in my stomach. The sad thing about the silence is that it never lasts. A person walks by, or a car drives by, and suddenly there’s noise again.
